Kathy Sierra: Building a Minimum Badass User.

MBU: Building the Minimum Badass User

The Lean Start-up movement gave us powerful, useful tools to discover what users want and how they want it, including the MVP or “Minimum Viable Product.” But the key attributes of a deeply desirable, sustainably successful product don’t live in the product. They live in the users. While pretty much anyone today can build an MVP in, oh, 45 minutes (assuming you’re not too picky about the “V”), building an MBU can be the most viable competitive advantage. We’ll look at exactly what and how to do it for both new and existing apps and services.

He’ll discuss some of the unique aspects of the Stack Overflow community, the basics of cultural anthropology, and how we’ve designed the sites to facilitate the community that our users ask for.

Peldi: Coding is the easy part!

Coding is the easiest part!

If you think your ability to code up a new web app in the course of a week-end is your ticket to startup success, think again. Soon you will realize that coding is the easiest (and most fun) part of your job.

Building and growing a business is HARD, and filled with, “what the…?”, moments.

In this talk Peldi  will talk about a number of strange things that happened to him in the 4 years of bootstrapping Balsamiq into a global, multi-million-dollar tiny little company. Lots of quick, direct and immediately applicable stories that will save you tons of time and frustration when they happen to you.

How to Build a World Class Culture in Three Easy Steps

Imagine what it would be like if, when it came time to hire someone new, you had a line around the corner of great candidates. Could your competitors keep up with you if you paid your employees below market salaries, but they still stayed with your company for years longer than the industry average? These things happen when your company is known as a great place to work, and being a great place to work is all about culture.

In this session, Mikey will teach you practical lessons about how to build a world class culture and a great place to work.

When software and people mix – Overcoming the SaaS Slow Ramp of Death.

Constant Contact offers great marketing software to people with very little technical expertise. Many said it couldn’t be done, but an IPO and more than half a million customers later, Constant Contact has proven them wrong. Gail will offer insights to help start-ups get beyond that ‘slow ramp of death’, including experimenting with your economic model, finding your inflection point and understanding your funnel. With the right mix of people, experimentation and perseverance, you can get enough ramp to catapult to the other side.

Paul Kenny: Resistance is futile!

Resistance is Futile!

In this his fifth Business of Software presentation Paul will explore what happens when customers say ” No Thank-you”. One of the highlights of being a founder is the feeling you get the moment when someone out there in the market says yes to purchasing your shiny new product. That sweet moment is the ultimate validation of your decision to go it alone. But what happens when after all the hard work and all he late nights a customer says no ? Worse still they trial your product and then resist all attempts at contact. This rejection can be hard to take. Your baby isn’t quite as cute and adorable as you thought.  Paul will explore why your attitude and your response to the people who say no is the thing that really defines your Start-up. He will explore the nature of resistance to the sale, reasons customers lose interest and decide not to buy your product and what you can do about it.

Bob Dorf: Customer Development. The science of acceleration for growth businesses.

Customer Development, the science of acceleration for growth businesses.

Whether your company’s a startup or a Fortune 100 striving for disruptive innovation and growth, the Customer Development process is a proven accelerant to business. Companies of all stripes use the Customer Development process to involve customers and their feedback in rapidly-iterated product and business model development – sometimes eating their established competitors for lunch in the process.

Bob will show how Alexander Osterwalder’s Business Model Canvas provides a framework to monitor Customer Development progress. The process brings a nearly scientific method to the typically chaotic, seemingly disorganized process of building a business. Steve Blank and Bob Dorf developed the Customer Development methodology a decade ago. The process has been proven with literally thousands of entrepreneurs and companies worldwide

Dan Pink: The surprising truth about moving others.

Dan will be talking about some of the ideas he is exploring in his new book due out in December, To Sell is Human. The Surprising Truth About Moving Others.

One in nine Americans works in sales—but so do the other eight out of nine.

Whether entrepreneurs persuading funders, employees pitching colleagues, or parents and teachers cajoling kids, we spend our days trying to move others. Today, like it or not, we’re all in sales and Pink offers a fresh look at the art and science of selling. He shows that sales, whether pushing a product or peddling an idea, isn’t what it used to be. Because of powerful economic changes, the glad-handing, truth-bending form of sales is a relic. In its place is a new approach to moving people that involves three very human qualities and four surprising skills.
